The Dangerous Goods Training Instructor will play a critical role in delivering high-quality, compliant, and engaging training across all modes of dangerous goods transport, ensuring learners are fully competent and certified in accordance with UK and international regulatory requirements. The instructor will design, deliver, and assess courses covering the carriage of dangerous goods by Air (CAA), Road (ADR), and Sea (IMDG), including Explosives and Radioactive materials. They will also maintain compliance with Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) duties, ensure adherence to Radiation Protection requirements, and contribute to continuous improvement of training content, standards, and delivery within NSL.
Roles & Responsibilities include:
Deliver high-quality Dangerous Goods training in accordance with CAA, ADR, and IMDG regulatory frameworks, ensuring compliance with all relevant national and international standards.
• Conduct instruction and assessment for courses including:
CAA DG by Air (including Radioactive)
ADR (including Explosives and Radioactive)
IMDG (including Explosives and Radioactive)
Driver CPC (5 ADR modules + 1 safety)
• Develop and maintain accurate training materials, presentations, and assessments aligned to regulatory updates and NSL standards.
• Carry out DGSA duties, offering expert advice on compliance, classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and transport of dangerous goods.
• Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), ensuring adherence to radiation safety requirements in training delivery.
• Maintain training records, certification logs, and competence matrices for audit and compliance purposes.
• Provide technical guidance and support to clients and learners.
Participate in training audits, regulatory reviews, and internal quality assurance activities.
Customer
• Deliver a professional and engaging learning experience that reflects NSL’s commitment to excellence.
• Engage with clients to understand specific operational training requirements and tailor course delivery accordingly.
• Provide advice, feedback, and post-course support to learners and clients.
• Identify opportunities to expand or improve the DG training portfolio.
• Represent NSL at industry events, customer meetings, and professional forums to promote training excellence.
Administration
• Maintain all course and learner documentation in compliance with CAA, SQA, and NSL procedures.
• Support accreditation, audit, and approval processes (e.g., CAA, DVSA/SQA, MCA).
• Manage course schedules, venues, and logistics to ensure effective training delivery.
• Liaise with internal departments regarding training planning, reporting, and quality management.
• Keep up to date with regulatory amendments and implement required changes in course content and delivery.
Minimum Qualifications
• Full UK Driving Licence
• UK CAA Dangerous Goods by Air Instructor (including Radioactive)
• DVSA/SQA ADR Instructor (including Explosives & Radioactive)
• IMDG Instructor (including Explosives & Radioactive)
• Qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA)
• Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS)
• Driver CPC Instructor (5 ADR modules + 1 safety)
• TQUK Level 3 Teaching Qualification
• Internal Assessor Qualification (LD 9/11)
Minimum Competencies (Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours)
• In-depth understanding of UK and international DG transport regulations (ADR, IATA DGR, IMDG Code, RID).
• Proven experience in training delivery and assessment across multiple DG modes.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to engage diverse learners and adapt instructional methods accordingly.
• Up-to-date knowledge of safety management systems and regulatory frameworks.
Desirable Qualifications / Competencies
• NEBOSH or IOSH qualification.
• Experience delivering DG training in offshore, aviation, or energy sectors.
• Familiarity with digital learning systems and course authoring tools.
• Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g., IATA, CILT, IOSH).
• Knowledge of emergency response and incident investigation processes.
